10 Blockbuster Smartphones Of 2013

Chennai: In this modern age, it is a fact that our lives are becoming increasingly connected. As a result, technology and Smartphones have become an integral part of our daily lives; people carry around their gadgets everywhere they go and do not wish to part from them even for a short while. We are a gadget obsessed generation. Over the years the Smartphones have evolved at speed of light, and no surprise this year saw some of the most beautiful technological innovations and marvels in handset designs, the curved phones, the retina displays, the 41 MP cameras and add on camera lenses say it all. And so, as another wonderful year is about to pass out of the calendar, we now take a look at the 10 blockbuster Smartphones of 2013, as compiled by NDTV Gadgets.


1. Samsung Galaxy S4


Samsung’s highly anticipated flagship device lived up to its high expectations. The device is super thin and has a 5-inch Super AMOLED display with a pixel density of 441. The body is made up of poly-carbonate and comes in two colors, ‘black mist’ and ‘white frost’. Similar to Note 3, the S4 too houses different hardware which is region dependant. While it is shipped with Android 4.2.2 (Jelly Bean), it is upgradable to v4.3 (Jelly Bean) and it is expected that S4 being a flagship device will get a v4.4 (KitKat) OS upgrade. This device too comes is 16/32/64 GB variants which can be expanded up to 64 GB via microSD and 2 GB of RAM.


2. Apple iPhone 5S


iPhone 5S’s launch was the most awaited Smartphone event of the year. This iconic device is the first Smartphone to support all the global LTE bands. It features a beautiful 4-inch IPS LCD display with a pixel density of 326 that has a Corning Gorilla Glass for protection. Other notable features include a 64-bit A7 chip which is coupled with 1 GB of RAM, an improved 8MP iSight camera that has a 1/3-inch sensor that is capable of Full HD 1080p recording, and a Touch ID fingerprint sensor. The device comes in 16/32/64 GB variants which are backed up by a non-removable Li-Po 1560 mAh battery.


3. Samsung Galaxy Note 3


Samsung for the first time ditched its plastic exterior and adopted a crafty leather design for the Note 3. The phablet stands out with a beautiful 5.7-inch Full HD Super AMOLED display, one of the biggest in the market. The phone has a 13 megapixel rear camera with LED flash and a 2 megapixel front camera, which is capable of shooting videos 4K and Full HD 1080p resolutions. The device comes in two variants, each of which contains a different combination of chipset, CPU and GPU, the LTE version has a 2.3GHz quad-core processor whereas the 3G variant runs on a 1.9GHz octa-core processor. The device also has 32GB/64GB storage options and has a powerful 3,200mAh battery.


4. Nokia Lumia 1520


The Lumia 1520 is the Finnish manufacturer’s latest flagship device and is its first ever phablet. It runs Windows Phone 8 Black for an OS and comes with an exciting 6-inch IPS LCD display screen at 1080 x 1920 pixel resolution; it packs a powerful quad-core 2.2 GHz Krait 400 processor that is paired with an Adreno 330 GPU and 2GB of RAM. The device features an excellent 20 megapixel PureView rear camera with Optical Image Stabilization that has a 1/2.5-inch sensor and a 1.2 megapixel secondary camera. The 1520 ships with 2 GB of RAM, 32 GB of internal storage that is expandable up to 64 GB, a non-removable 3400 mAh Li-Ion battery, and also offers NFC and wireless charging.



5. LG G2


The LG G2 has a top-of-the line quad-core 2.26 GHz Krait 400 processor which is paired with an Adreno 330 GPU and 2 GB of RAM, a large 5.2 inch True HD-IPS screen and an excellent 13 MP camera that is blazing fast and is capable of recording Full HD 1080p videos. The gadget runs on Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean) and to enhance the music and video experience, the model features a 24-bit/192kHz audio, and some of the noticeable innovative changes are the physical buttons which have been moved to the rear and the ‘Answer me’ feature that automatically attends the call when brought near one’s ear. This device is powered by a non-removable 3000 mAh Li-Po battery.


6. BlackBerry Q10


The Q10 is the Canadian manufacturer’s latest offering. The phone comes with touch and type functionality with BB’s traditional QWERTY keypad and features a 3.1-inch AMOLED touchscreen. It boasts a 1.5GHz Cortex-A9 dual-core processor coupled with 2GB RAM, and runs on BlackBerry 10 OS while offering 16 GB internal storage that is expandable up to 64 GB via microSD. It houses an 8MP rear camera which is capable of taking Full HD videos of 1080p and a 2MP front camera that is capable of recording videos of 720p. Its connectivity features includes, 2G, 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0 NFC and microUSB 2.0, and the device is powered by a 2100 mAh battery.


7. Motorola Moto X


Moto X is the first Smartphone made by Motorola after being acquired by Google. This device rose to popularity for its customizable options such as, being able to choose from 18 back colors, 7 accent colors, 2 types of cases offered in various colors, and also 3 remarkable back panels made entirely out of wood! It features a 4.7 inch 16M-color 720p capacitive touchscreen with AMOLED display that is protected by Gorilla Glass. Under the hood it packs a dual-core 1.7 GHz processor, a custom-built Motorola X8 Mobile Computing System, based on a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro chipset that is coupled with 2GB of RAM and an Adreno 320 GPU while being powered by a 2200 Li-Ion battery. The devices ships with Android 4.2.2 (Jelly Bean) but is upgradable to v4.4 (KitKat).



8. Sony Xperia Z Ultra


The device comes with 6.44" Full HD at 1080p resolutions screen, first ever for any phablet. The display uses Sony's TRILUMINOS and X-Reality for mobile technology, with an OptiContrast panel to reduce reflection and enable clearer viewing even in bright sunlight. The screen is highly responsive and compatible with stylus as well as regular pens and pencils. It has a 2 megapixel front camera and an 8 megapixel rear camera with an Exmor RS sensor, 16x digital zoom with auto focus, 1080p HD recording, HDR, continue burst mode and face detection. The Z Ultra runs Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean) and is upgradable to v4.4 (KitKat); it is powered by a quad-core 2.2 GHz Krait 400 processor that is coupled with an Adreno 330 GPU and 2 GB of RAM while drawing power from a non-removable 3050 mAh Li-Ion battery.



9. HTC One


The HTC One which stands out with a classy metal body finish that matches Apple’s standards. One has a new feature called BlinkFeed. This is a user live tile UI, similar to Windows Phone 8 tiles and Flipboard, it works like an aggregator for news content, videos and photos. It features a 4.7 inch Full HD Super LCD3 capacitive touchscreen with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels, protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 2. HTC One will be the first Smartphone to feature a 4 MP UltraPixel Camera - an advanced imaging technology that offers a great leap in the quality of point-and-shoot photos and video. It is is capable to capture video and image simultaneously in Full HD. On the software side, the device ships with Android 4.1.2 (Jelly Bean) and is upgradable to the latest Android 4.4 (KitKat). From a hardware perspective, it has a quad-core 1.7 GHz Krai 300processor that is couple with an Adreno 320 GPU and 2 GB of RAM and houses a non-removable Li-Po 3200 mAh battery.



10. LG G Flex


G Flex is LG’s first ever Smartphone with curved display and the very first such phone to debut in India, and it will be rivaling Samsung’s Galaxy round. But unlike Round, the G Flex is curved horizontally which aids in making calls and offers an immersive video watching experience. It is sturdier than most devices and its self-healing back panel is a much needed piece of innovation. The device has a 6 inch curved O-OLED HD display with a resolution of 1280 X 720 pixels, and ships with Android 4.2.2 (Jelly Bean) out of the box; it sports a capable 13 megapixel camera on the back and a 2.1 megapixel snapper on the front. The other specifications include a quad-core 2.26 GHz Krait 400 processor that is coupled with an Adreno 330 GPU and 2 GB of RAM, has 32 GB of internal storage and does not offer any provision for expanding it further, and the device is fueled by a 3500 mAh battery.
