Bangalore: Silicon Valley of India has finally got its free Wi-Fi connectivity hotspots making Bangalore the first city in India to get free WiFi zones. The government has gifted 6 hotspots to the city titled, “Namma WiFi”. Your devices can catch the signals on MG Road, Brigade Road, CMH Road, and around the bus stations of Yeshwantpur, Koramangala and Shanthinagar.
Citizens can use the internet for three hours or up to 50MB of data downloads with 512kbps bandwidth. Users will be issued a one-time password (OTP) once they register on the network. You can find app on Google Play to assist you in accessing internet on these spots. However, there is no word for an app on other popular mobile platforms like Windows Phone 8, iOS among others. Now! You need not have 2G or 3G connection to access web in these areas.
There will be 23 access points on MG Road where around 2400 users can log in at a time. The service is available in 28 other localities. The facility was initiated by the state IT department and the ICT (information and communications technologies) group, reports The New Indian Express.
Minister for IT, S R Patil told that Wi-Fi will boost online shopping, give access to government schemes and encourage start-ups. It will help in providing accessibility to government services like Sakaala and BangaloreOne. He expressed happiness as the IT capital of the country got a facility which was long overdue.
The service provider, D-Vois Broadband Private Limited is providing free Wi-Fi which may stay so forever! The Managing Director of the firm, Ramesh Sathya told that they have a business plan to make it, self sustainable.
There are plans to utilize the facility to manage traffic, parking and even garbage. Applications will be developed to provide information about the traffic scenario on these roads. Installing sensors on road sides to help commuters know the parking space availability is also in the pipeline.
Further, the government is planning to extend the service to 10-15 more areas in the city. It is envisioned that tier two cities like Mysore, Mangalore, Hubli-Dharwad and Belgaum will be the next ones to get the benefit.
The other cities in the country are to follow suit. The Mumbai Mayor Sunil Prabhu said similar proposal is present in front of them but expressed concerns about the security aspect.
